Manchester United have made a decision about Dan Ashworth's replacement following his shock departure.

Ashworth was ruthlessly let go by Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Sunday in wake of Man United's damaging home 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

He held crunch talks with chief executive Omar Berrada before Ratcliffe signed off on the 53-year-old's dismissal.

Ashworth lasted just five months at the club after being recruited from Newcastle United, but they have come to a mutual agreement to part ways.

A statement read: "Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.

"We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future."

Ashworth is expected to have no shortage of offers to return to football and has been linked with a move to one of Man United's main Premier League rivals.

As for Man United, the sporting director role has been DITCHED after their Ashworth experiment.

That's according to The Sun, who claim the post has been consigned to history.

Ratcliffe has decided that his INEOS right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford, Berrarda and technical director Jason Wilcox will share the responsibilities of the position.

Per the report, Ashworth's sacking will also open the door to further cuts at Man United.

He fought against too many cutbacks despite Ratcliffe wanting more, with 250 staff made redundant.

Ashworth leaves Old Trafford with the club languishing in 13th place in the league table.

Ruben Amorim's side were condemned to their sixth league defeat of the season when they succumbed to Nuno Espirito Santo's Forest.

It's back-to-back defeats for the Red Devils, who resume their league campaign against cross-town rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
