In September, the Sun claimed four United stars were involved in a heated dressing-room altercation in the wake of the club’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The publication alleged that captain Bruno Fernandes confronted midfield partner Scott McTominay.

Meanwhile, centre-back pairing Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are also said to have “lost it” with each other following the club’s third defeat in four games.

And the aforementioned contingent of players may face see the roles at Old Trafford change in future.

While Martinez is set to stay, having been among the club’s most consistent performers in his first season at Old Trafford, it’s uncertain he will be the same player having suffered a knee ligament injury.

Fernandes is also likely to remain at United for the long term. However, doubts have been raised over his suitability as captain.

Several former United players, including Paul Ince, have questioned whether the Portugal international has the correct temperament to be the club’s skipper in the past year.

Elsewhere, McTominay has been linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford for the past several windows. In January the Scotland international was even linked with moves to West Ham United and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

McTominay’s United contract expires in the summer of 2025, and the club could look to cash in at the end of this season to guarantee themselves a fee for him.

Victor Lindelof has also been linked to a United departure for several years. With the centre-back’s deal also set to expire in less than 18 months, United could be keen to make a sale at the end of the campaign.
