A respected journalist has provided an update on the fitness of Luke Shaw following reports the Manchester United defender has suffered another setback in his recovery from injury.

Shaw, 29, has struggled with persistent injury problems throughout his United career and has managed just five games for the club over the course of the last 12 months.

The England international sustained hamstring and calf problems last year and had made just three substitute appearances for United this term before suffering another injury setback in December.

Club sources told the BBC at the time that the injury was new, rather than a recurrence of a previous problem.

Shaw was expected to return to the first-team in the coming weeks after he was spotted back in training in January.

However, The Mirror reported on Wednesday morning that he has suffered another setback that will see him miss at least four more weeks.

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has since responded to those reports, claiming Shaw is set to miss Friday's FA Cup fourth round clash with Leicester but will return to full training next week.

He did not state if Shaw is expected to be fit in time to face Spurs in the Premier League the following Sunday.

SPORTbible has reached out to Manchester United for comment.

Shaw himself has not commented on the reports, unlike in December when he released a statement saying he was "devastated" by his initial injury setback.

"Hi guys, it's hurting a lot having to write this as I really thought I had got through my recent struggles and was on a positive path going forward, but unfortunately, I've had a small setback," he posted on Instagram at the time.

"I've been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs but this has definitely been my toughest period. I'm absolutely devastated and it's extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time.

"I understand there is gunna be people frustrated, angry, disappointed and I understand all that. There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time.

"But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season.

"Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn't go unnoticed and I really do appreciate it."
