Gary Neville was on the receiving end of an expletive-filled insult after watching Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

Arne Slot's side moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League with the victory, achieved courtesy of goals from Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah. Liverpool inflicted a fourth consecutive league defeat for Pep Guardiola and City, who now find themselves in fifth place and 11 points adrift of the leaders.

Anfield was bouncing yet again after the Reds followed up the win over 15-time European champions with a comfortable win over a side who have won six out of the last seven titles in England but look like their reign is coming to an end.

Manchester United legend and former captain Gary Neville was in attendance at Anfield, providing co-commentary alongside Peter Drury.

But while it's been a long time since Neville was fined £5000 for celebrating in front of Liverpool fans while at United, plenty of supporters do not have a great opinion on him.

And while he was in the gantry on Sunday, Neville was the subject of an x-rated comment from a fan. A video shared online showed a supporter screaming, 'Gary you manc c***, get in!" in a thick Liverpudlian accent.

Despite the tirade of abuse which came his way, Neville was incredibly complimentary about Liverpool's incredible run under Slot, who has taken them up another gear after replacing Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman only made one signing in the summer in Federico Chiesa, but has improved so many of Liverpool's players and has them top of both the Premier League and Champions League.

Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast after the City victory, Neville said: "It's an unbelievable performance from Liverpool. The people who have appointed [Slot], the people who've created the stability, the players, most of all, in the sense of getting behind him. It's really incredible what we're watching.

"None of us expected it. I think Liverpool fans expected it. They may have expected them to finish in the top four but it's absolutely brilliant what Arne Slot's done and it gets really serious. It's gone from being a honeymoon period, a great start to 'hang on a minute'.

"There's a real expectation but they'll be very, very strong favourites."

Liverpool return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St James' Park to play Newcastle United.
