Ruud van Nistelrooy's son Liam is going viral as fans can't believe how much he plays like his dad

Like father, like son. It certainly appears to be the case for Liam van Nistelrooy.

The 18-year-old striker is a key part of the PSV Eindhoven academy and is following in the steps of his father, Ruud, with his recent exploits in attack.

Van Nistelrooy went viral over the weekend when he scored a stunning goal against Chelsea Under-19s that saw PSV book their place in the Otten Innovation Cup final.

With his father watching from the stands, the Dutch teenager raced through on goal from the halfway line and kept his composure to calmly lift the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

It was a moment of pure class from the striker, with supporters not only blown away by his quality in front of goal, but also by just how much he looked like his father.

Van Nistelrooy not only appears to be as clinical as his father, but even the way he runs with the ball bears close resemblance to the Manchester United legend.

"Runs and moves just like his Dad. Crazy," wrote one user on X after the goal went viral over the weekend. Another wrote: "Receives like his Dad. Runs like his Dad. Accelerates like his Dad. Finishes like his Dad. Runs away and celebrates like his Dad. Then there's the real Van Nistelrooy seating there and smiling, knowing that's him some 20 something years ago."

A few fans even pointed out that Van Nistelrooy's goal against Chelsea was similar to the goal his father scored against Arsenal back in April 2003.

That was one of 150 goals in 219 appearances for the Dutchman, who became an Old Trafford great after he joined from PSV back in 2001.

He scored an incredible 77 goals in 90 appearances for the Dutch club before he eventually moved to Manchester a year later than planned due to injury.

Van Nistelrooy was a key part of the United squad that won the Premier League in 2003, winning the Golden Boot with 25 goals in the process. He scored a remarkable 44 goals in all competitions that season, the second-highest season tally in the club's history, only behind Denis Law, who notched 46 goals in 1964.

It is understood the United legend is set to remain in his role as Netherlands assistant manager after he joined Ronald Koeman's team for the 2026 World Cup. Although there has been no official announcement, he is expected to be retained under new head coach Xavi.

He will be watching on with interest as Liam looks to make his breakthrough into senior football this coming season and follow in the footsteps of fellow forward Shaqueel van Persie, who has been given a chance in the Feyenoord first team.

Who knows. In a few years, the Netherlands could have Van Nistelrooy and Van Persie in attack again.
