Edinson Cavani's reaction to hearing a fan shout "Manchester United" at him while on international duty is going viral again.

The 38-year-old striker, who joined United on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, quickly became a fan favourite at Old Trafford after making a strong start to life under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He scored 17 goals in all competitions for United in 2020-21, an impressive debut season that led to a one-year contract extension and two catchy songs from the terraces, including a chant based on ABBA's '70s hit, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!

Ultimately, Cavani was considered more of an impact player towards the end of his two-year stay in Manchester, but his popularity amongst fans stayed strong.

In fact, while on international duty with Uruguay in 2022, the striker was called over by a United supporter, who shouted "Man Utd" in his direction before the pair exchanged a hearty handshake.

As seen above, a video of the moment was posted to X on Wednesday morning. It soon went viral.

"The smile on Edinson Cavani's face when this young Manchester United fan calls him and says ‘Man United’ says it all," said user Manchester United Forever. "He didn't start in all of their matches, but whenever he got chances, he delivered."

Cavani's bond with the United fanbase was evident throughout his time at the club.

Back in May 2022, after Cavani featured in his final game for United – a 3-0 win over Brentford – the former Napoli striker bumped into his biggest fan, Lola Eastwood.

Eastwood, a self-confessed 'super fan' of the Uruguayan, bumped into Cavani as he made his way through the car park at full-time.

"It made my life meeting him, especially as he will probably go back to South America now," Lola told SPORTbible. "It was better than I could ever imagine. He turned to me and just hugged me, which made me cry even more."

Edinson Cavani's final message to Man Utd supporters speaks volumes

In his final interview as a Manchester United player, Cavani was full of praise for the United fanbase.

“I sincerely have nothing but words of gratitude towards the fans and supporters of Manchester United. Honestly, they have shown me a lot of respect from the very first moment I arrived," he said.

"I think they’ve greatly recognised all the hard work I’ve always tried to put in in the best way possible, giving my best for this team. I really am very grateful, and I’ll be leaving here with a happy memory of that affection they showed me and always displayed.

"But it’s also a bit like I mentioned to you. I’ll have that slightly bitter taste of having wanted to contribute more and having really wanted to feature more regularly this season.

"Of being able to have shown a little more consistency that, on occasions, injuries and other small issues have not allowed me to do. But I want to sincerely thank them from the bottom of my heart, because they have always shown me a lot of affection, and that is very important for a footballer.”
