Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Wayne Rooney asked ‘who the f**k is this guy?’ when Manchester United signed a player who went on to become a club icon.

Both Ferdinand and Rooney were vital players for United under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.

At their peak, United were feared not just in England, but around Europe too.

However, the former defender has now revealed that Rooney was rather unimpressed after seeing Nemanja Vidic in training.

Speaking on Vibe with Five, Ferdinand said: “I remember after one session, me and Wazza were walking around.

“He said, ‘who the f**k is this guy?’”

He continued: “Vidic was terrible. He and Evra signed in the same window.

“Rooney was going, ‘the manager has f****d it, he’s messed up, I don’t know what’s going on with the recruitment.”

Rooney was swiftly proved wrong as Vidic went on to become one of the finest defenders the Premier League has ever seen.

The Serbian ended up making 300 appearances for the Old Trafford club across all competitions, scoring 21 goals.

Vidic also got his hands on five Premier League titles, four FA Community Shields, three League Cups, one Champions League and one FIFA Club World Cup.

After retiring, Vidic is now studying to become a coach and has spent time with the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford.

Back in April, Vidic told Ferdinand that he would have loved to play in the current United era.

He said: “The only thing I have as a regret is that I didn’t have Ed Woodward in my time. Why are you laughing?”

Ferdinand replied: “Because of money. You’re talking money and contracts.”
