Manchester United fans think a forgotten star will make a return against Manchester City this weekend.

On Sunday, United will welcome local rivals City to Old Trafford for the first Manchester derby of the Premier League season.

Heading into the match, City are the clear favourites to take all three points after United’s poor start to the campaign.

However, Erik ten Hag’s men unexpectedly won their last meeting at Old Trafford and will be hoping to shock the champions again this time around.

Ahead of the much-anticipated clash, United fans are convinced that young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is set to return to the team.

The 18-year-old midfielder suffered an injury during United’s pre-season tour in the United States and has since been recovering.

This week, Mainoo made his return after playing 45 minutes in midweek. On Friday, he was left out of the U21 side that played against Fulham, leading to United fans speculating about his potential involvement against City.

One fan said: “Have a weird feeling that Ten Hag will throw Kobbie Mainoo in the team.”

Another tweeted: “Kobbie Mainoo is about to return and cook Man City.”

A third fan added: “No Mainoo for the U21s you say?? Masterclass on Sunday against City incoming.”

Someone else wrote: “Mainoo gonna be back for City and Pep isn’t ready for the masterclass.”

However, United’s academy manager Travis Binnion admitted he is not sure what will happen next for Mainoo after his midweek return.

He told MUTV: “It's important that he gets those minutes and he'll feel a lot more confident after that.

“I don't know what's in store for him over the next few weeks, but he's going to try to keep building up now and hopefully get in and around that first-team squad and have an impact there.”
