The reason why Manchester City new boy Savio wears ‘Savinho’ on the back of his shirt has been revealed.

On Thursday, it was confirmed that Premier League champions City have completed the signing of Brazilian winger Savio from sister club Troyes, who are part of the wider City Football Group.

A club statement read: “Manchester City are delighted to announce the signing of Brazilian winger Savinho from Troyes on a five-year deal until 2029.

“The 20-year-old is our first signing of the summer ahead of the 2024/25 season as we look to win an unprecedent fifth Premier League title.”

The 20-year-old has revealed that he no longer wants to be referred to as Savio, as he was during his time at Girona and Troyes.

He said, as per The Telegraph: “It’s because for my first call-up with the national team [in March against England and Spain] they put ‘Savinho’, and people in Girona knew me more as ‘Savinho’ too, even though I had ‘Sávio’ on my shirt.

“So, I chose to go back to having ‘Savinho’ on my shirt, and I hope the ‘Savinho’ name brings me some good luck!”

Upon joining the club, he told City’s official website: “I’m excited about the chance to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest coaches ever, and someone I know will help me improve even more.

“I had an amazing time in Spain and I’m looking forward to a new challenge of playing in the Premier League and alongside some of the best players in the world.”

Savinho added: “I can’t wait to meet the fans and my new team-mates and hopefully be a part of bringing more success to City.”

City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “Savinho is a very exciting player and I think the City fans are really going to enjoy watching him.

“What he achieved last season at Girona was remarkable and he is already a full Brazil international. He has a big role to play for Manchester City this season and beyond.”
