Spanish title challengers Girona have seen their recent social media post regarding Manchester City receive huge backlash from fans, who have called out the club for 'embarrassing' behavior.

Girona have been one of the shocks of the season across Europe, as they flew out of the blocks in La Liga leading the way until recently where they have slipped to second behind Real Madrid.

Girona and Manchester City have the same Middle-Eastern owners, and Girona's form could lead to City missing out on a place in the Champions League.

This is because of UEFA’s rules on multi-model ownership. Under UEFA regulations no two teams from within the same ownership group can compete against one another.

Should two clubs from the same ownership group qualify for the same UEFA competition, the side which finishes highest in its domestic championship qualifies.

Girona's connection to City is what has sparked social media outrage, as the club announced that City's trophy tour would be making its way to Spain.

The official Girona X account posted: "Manchester City's treble trophies, in Girona fans will have the opportunity to watch live and take pictures with the prestigious trophies this Saturday, from 10 to 1, at the La Rambla store, and on Monday, at the Fan Zone in Montilivi, from 6 to 7 pm."

The post was littered with comments slamming the club, with fans claiming it demonstrated a poor mentality.

One fan commented: "What happened to earn it on the pitch?"

A Real Madrid fan added: "Hahaha And some called it a humble team, and the one that had to be champion. How ashamed I would be if the RM did this."

"And there were people who wanted Gerona to win La Liga because they are a 'humble team'," Another fan criticized.

A fourth fan commented: "This tweet is embarrassing me and I'm not from Girona, damn how embarrassing."
