Portugal legend Luis Figo has hit back after a fake quote about the Ballon d’Or emerged on social media.

On Monday night, all eyes are on the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France as the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner is revealed.

However, ahead of the ceremony, the headlines were made by Real Madrid after it was reported that the club would not be attending the event after finding out star man Vinicius Junior had missed out on the award.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano wrote: “Not even one representative of Real Madrid is expected to travel to Paris tonight.

“This is club’s decision after Vinicius Jr was made aware that he will not win the Ballon d’Or.”

On the back of the news, an account on social media named Madrid Xtra posted a quote from ex-player Figo which read: “The Ballon d'Or is a prestigious award, until today.”

However, the man himself has issued a furious statement and has claimed the quote is fake.

Figo wrote: “I don’t know who manage this account but or you rectify this post or I have to suit you because this is not my words and if you want polemic let’s make it in the court!!!”

The first trophy of the night, the Kopa Trophy, was won by Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal.

Speaking on the stage, the 17-year-old said: “It’s a pride to receive this trophy. I dedicate this prize to my mother, my grandmother, to the team, the coaches. It's for those who supported me.

“Visça el Barça y La capital 304.”

Barcelona then won the women's club of the year, with Madrid winning the award for the men's category.

After the news of Vinicius missing out on the Ballon d’Or emerged, it was quickly suggested that Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri could be named as the winner.

The 28-year-old played an integral role in City’s charge for the Premier League title last season and was also a key part of the Spain squad which won Euro 2024 by beating England 2-1 in the final.
