Virgil van Dijk breaks an all-time Liverpool record vs Brentford in his 250th appearance

An incredible achievement.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has broken an all-time club record in his 250th appearance for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp's side secured a 4-1 win over Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium this lunchtime, with Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, a returning Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo all getting on the scoresheet.

But the game didn't pass without incident, as Diogo Jota went off with a suspected knee injury after Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard accidentally landing his full weight on him.

Curtis Jones was also forced off through injury, with Nunez taken off at half-time for a yet unconfirmed reason.

But there was cause for some celebration with the win, as well as Van Dijk making his 250th appearance for the club since signing from Southampton in January 2018.

Barring an anterior cruciate ligament injury that saw him miss almost the entirety of the 2020/21 campaign, the Dutchman has been an ever-present in the Liverpool side that has become one of the most dominant forces in English football under Klopp.

Saturday marked his 250th appearance in a Reds shirt - and he has comfortably broken an all-time Liverpool record by doing so.

As posted by OptaJoe's Michael Reid, no other Liverpool player has recorded more victories in their first 250 appearances for the club than Van Dijk, who has been on the winning side on 171 occasions.

The majority of the top 10 list is made up by players who have worked under Klopp, except for Ian Rush, Alan Kennedy and Steve McMahon, who made most of their combined appearances before the Premier League era beginning in 1992.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, he said: "I had no clue I was playing my 250th game for Liverpool, but it 's a proud moment, a proud moment for me and my family. On to many more.

"Today was a tough game for many reasons, even before all the injuries during the game, it was always going to be tough. We didn't win here the last two times.

"They make it difficult for you, with the way they don't give up, their set pieces, their directness. We had to be ready to fight.

"Obviously with the goals we scored, that helps massively as well."
