Liverpool fans have flocked to social media as they reacted to Trent Alexander-Arnold's message to James Maddison after Manchester City lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

On Saturday evening, City fell to their fifth consecutive defeat after they were outplayed, outclassed and outfought by Ange Postecoglou's team.

A brace from Maddison plus strikes by Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson earned Spurs a massive 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

As a result, Pep Guardiola's men remain five points adrift of Liverpool in the Premier League table, with Arne Slot's team taking on bottom-side Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Shortly after the match, Reds star Alexander-Arnold took to Instagram to post a picture of himself alongside Spurs man Maddison, with a message that read: "Happy Birthday brother @madders."

The timing of the post has got Liverpool fans talking. Reacting on social media, one said: "Trent knows it, we all know it. There’s a title to be won."

Another tweeted: "Trent Alexander-Arnold waited until after the match to wish Maddison a Happy Birthday. Good timing."

A third fan added: "Trent knows, let's win this thing, starting from tomorrow."

Someone else wrote: "Class timing from Trent lol. He knows what he's doing waiting until after the match."

Speaking after the match, Maddison, who turned 28 today, said: "That's a birthday I’ll look back on quite fondly. To come here to the champions and perform like that and get the result. You have to cherish these ones, they don’t come around often."

He added: "I thought we were brilliant. It was everything we wanted to show of a top Spurs team. We were clinical, we had cutting edge, we pressed at times. We weathered the storm, had grit and determination and scored four brilliant goals.

"I feel good, I came out of team for a couple of games. When you come out of the team as a senior player or leader people ask questions and point fingers, but I feel good, I never doubted myself. I’m an attacking midfielder, I need to chip in with goals and assists but I haven’t been doing that this season."
