Liverpool fans have ordered Richard Hughes to complete one signing after missing out on Martin Zubimendi, who is set to join Arsenal.

Back in the summer transfer window, Liverpool identified Real Sociedad star Zubimendi as their primary target to strengthen Arne Slot's midfield options.

However, the Spaniard opted to stay with his boyhood club and rejected a move to Anfield.

It has been anticipated that Liverpool could go back in for the 25-year-old next summer with the club still interested in signing him. Aside from the Reds, the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid have also been linked.

However, on Tuesday afternoon, Liverpool were dealt a huge blow.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Zubimendi is on the verge of completing a deal to join Arsenal, who will formally trigger the player's £51 million release clause.

The star midfielder has been courted by Mikel Arteta for over 12 months and talks over a summer move are now at an 'advanced stage'.

It was suggested that Arsenal wanted Zubimendi to join now but Sociedad insisted the player stays until the end of the season.

On the back of the latest development, Liverpool fans have urged Richard Huges to target Brighton and Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: "I want Baleba by tomorrow or Richard Hughes has to go."

Another tweeted: "Can we get Baleba now ? Ehn Richard Hughes."

A third fan added: "I would have preferred someone like Baleba anyway but a serious decision is needed regarding Richard Hughes."

Someone else wrote: "I still prefer Baleba, but honestly this is embarrassing. Richard Hughes out now."

A fifth commented: "Get Carlos Baleba from Brighton. He's younger and has a higher ceiling than Zubimendi."

Liverpool are back in Premier League action on Tuesday night when they take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
