Liverpool fans have turned on one player despite late comeback win vs Southampton

Liverpool came from behind to beat Southampton 3-2 but fans criticised one member of Arne Slot's side.

Liverpool fans slated one of their own players despite coming from behind to beat Southampton away from home.

The Reds went 1-0 up when Alex McCarthy gifted Dominik Szoboszlai early on but bottom club Southampton turned it around. After Adam Armstrong converted the rebound from a penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher following a controversial call, Mateus Fernandes put Russell Martin's side in the lead early in the second half.

But Liverpool talisman Mo Salah struck twice, including the winner from the spot in the 83rd minute, to make it 10 goals for the season and complete the comeback win.

Liverpool moved eight points clear of next opponents Manchester City after Pep Guardiola's side were thrashed 4-0 at home to Spurs to make it an unprecedented five defeats in a row.

But despite the victory, Liverpool supporters were not all that happy and laid into striker Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan was completely ineffective at St Mary's and plenty of fans are still not buying into what he brings to the table now he is in his third season on Merseyside.

The former Benfica man was guilty of feigning a strike to the face from Saints skipper Jack Stephens but was otherwise largely anonymous up top. And for many fans, they cannot wait until Diogo Jota is back fit again to lead the line.

One wrote: "I can’t believe Nunez isn’t coming off. Heavy international break, poor game and more importantly Gakpo's been one of our best players!"

A second said: "Is Nunez gonna do a single thing in the box this game? It’s like we don’t have a striker on the pitch."

A third commented: "How is Darwin Nunez still on the pitch?"

A fourth added: "I’d rather Diaz play 9 than Nunez. Darwin offers absolutely sweet f**k all."

A final user posted: "Love all the guys, but Darwin Nunez really does not help himself. Honestly."

Liverpool return to action on Wednesday then they host Real Madrid in the Champions League, before they take on City at Anfield on Sunday.
