One player’s Liverpool career came to a rapid close after Jurgen Klopp witnessed his worst-ever game in memory.

Since Klopp took over the reins at Anfield back in 2015, he has largely been a success.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz manager led Liverpool to victory in the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup, FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and FA Community Shield.

However, the 22/23 season was one to forget for Klopp and the Reds as they finished in a disappointing fifth place.

During the season, Liverpool suffered a string of dismal defeats but one in particular stood out for Klopp.

“I can't remember a worse game, I honestly can't, I mean all, not only Liverpool, and that's my responsibility. So that makes it a really low point,” he said after his side’s 3-0 defeat at the AMEX Stadium against Brighton and Hove Albion back in January 2023.

That defeat left Liverpool in ninth place, 16 points off the league leaders.

On the day, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started in the middle of the park.

After the match, the likes of Fabinho and Henderson continued to start games before their transfers to Saudi Arabia prior to the start of the 23/24 season.

However, for Oxlade-Chamberlain, the start at Brighton was his 70th and last ever for Liverpool.

The midfielder enjoyed bright spells during his time at Anfield but was badly hampered by multiple injury problems.

During the summer transfer window, Oxlade-Chamberlain left the club on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract.

On the back of leaving Liverpool, Oxlade-Chamberlain decided to join Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas.

Klopp also decided to revamp his midfield department after losing Fabinho, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita.

In turn, the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch were brought in.

With new midfield options at his disposal, Klopp’s new-look Liverpool side have enjoyed a promising start to the 23/24 season.

Currently, the Reds are top of the Premier League with 45 points, two points ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa.

They will be back in action on 21 January when they take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
