The Premier League has officially released a statement after Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi was denied a penalty during the 1-0 loss to Liverpool.

Arne Slot continued his impressive form since taking over as Liverpool boss on Saturday as his side earned their ninth win in 10 matches, defeating Palace 1-0 in the Premier League.

Diogo Jota scored the winning goal for the visitors, who dominated most of the match, just nine minutes into the match.

However, one key talking point from the match came when Guehi was denied a penalty after seemingly being fouled by Virgil van Dijk in the box, and the Premier League has now officially responded to the incident.

A header from Trevoh Chalobah in the Liverpool box looked likely to find teammate Guehi just inches from the net but before he could get to it, it appears that the Englishman was pulled to the ground by the Liverpool captain.

Referee Simon Hooper did not believe the incident to be foul play and as VAR agreed, a penalty was not awarded to the hosts.

Posting on social media platform X shortly after the decision was made, the Premier League Match Centre account wrote: "The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by van Dijk on Guehi is checked and confirmed by VAR - deeming that the challenge was not sustained holding and had no impact on the play."

But fans disagree with the decision, and took to social media to protest against the referee's call.

Reacting to a clip of the moment on X, one fan wrote: "Stops him going for the ball , penalty all day"

Another agreed, adding: "They said they were getting tough on this foul this season but clearly not, that’s a penalty."

While one angry fan wrote: "He knows what he is doing. Yet - a qualified ref with multiple replays and angles says no. Get rid of VAR (the people) it is too subjective and flawed."

But not all fans believed that Van Dijk had committed a foul or that a penalty should have been awarded to Palace.

One fan wrote: "I mean if that’s a penalty then every team is going to get about 5 or 6 every game."

While another pointed out: "It is 100% a foul, but Guéhi was never getting to the ball anyway so nothing was lost or gained in that phase of play. No penalty."
