Alan Shearer labelled a 'hypocrite' over Diogo Jota 'dive' claim as comments resurface

Alan Shearer labelled a 'hypocrite' over Diogo Jota 'dive' claim as comments resurface

Liverpool fans have called out Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer for his comments on Diogo Jota's dive during their 4-2 win over the Magpies on Monday.

Jurgen Klopp's side moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League table following an eventful second half at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring before Alexander Isak equalised. Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo then netted in quick succession to give Liverpool a two-goal advantage. Sven Botman halved the deficit before the game's most controversial incident four minutes from time.

Jota skipped past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka before going down under the slightest of touches.

The Portugal international practically had an open net to aim for but chose to hit the deck. Referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot and Salah stepped up to bag his second of the game and wrap up victory.

Shearer was watching along at home and took to social media to express his frustration at Jota's conduct.

He posted to X, formerly known as Twitter: "F**king embarrassing."

The 53-year-old is a lifelong Newcastle fan and isn't afraid to let his emotions get the better of him during their games.

It does contradict his usually balanced opinions when appearing as a pundit on Match of the Day or Premier League Productions.

Liverpool supporters were quick to dig up Shearer's previous comments about Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in 2017.

Calvert-Lewin won a penalty against Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby after going down under minimal contact from Dejan Lovren.

Shearer backed Calvert-Lewin at the time, explaining: "You can’t give someone a reason to go down."

Naturally, Liverpool fans have had a field day.

One person said: "We know it’s always been double standard with the media and this has been the case for ages."

A second put: "He is just ridiculous."

Someone commented: "Like Alan never dived when he was playing."

While a fourth added: "Only when it goes against his beloved Newcastle it seems."
