Lionel Messi fan thread 'proves' Cristiano Ronaldo is 'obsessed' with Ballon d'Or winner

A fan of Lionel Messi’s has ‘proved’ that Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘obsessed’ with the Argentina legend.

On Monday night, Messi was presented with his eighth Ballon d’Or award after finishing ahead of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

Winning the illustrious award capped off a wonderful 12 months which included inspiring Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar.

On the back of Messi’s latest achievement, a fan on social media has put together a thread in a bid to prove long-term rival Ronaldo is obsessed with the Argentine legend.

The thread included some old quotes that Ronaldo has said about Messi.

After being whistled at when Portugal were eliminated at Euro 2012, Ronaldo reportedly said: “You know where Messi was in those heights in South America last year?

“Do You know what he did? Do You know or you don’t? He was eliminated in Copa America in his own country. I think that’s worse, don’t you?”

Back in 2021, Ronaldo was spotted commenting on a post that was questioning Messi’s Ballon d’Or award.

During an interview with French news outlet L’Equipe, Ronaldo’s sister revealed: “We don't talk about Messi inside the house. Cristiano knows that outside the door, there's a whirlwind.

“He's very focused, in his own bubble, but he's also very anxious. He plays the match out in his head, thinks about how things will happen.” You can see the whole thread here.

After clinching his eighth Ballon d’Or on Monday, Messi said: “Thanks to everyone, especially my teammates. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. This Ballon d'Or is a great gift for all of Argentina. I don't want to forget Haaland or Mbappé, who had a great year, spectacular, and in the coming years they will win this award.

“The level [of competition] never decreases, I have been lucky to be here for many years. I want to provide a special mention for all those people who were happy that Argentina became world champions. Thanks also to all my family, my wife, my children, for being there in the worst moments, and they have helped me fulfill my dreams in football. Without you it would not have been possible.”
