Jurgen Klopp sent heartbroken text to player when he joined rival club after 'crying on the phone'

Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the 23/24 season.

Jurgen Klopp once sent a text to his former player who joined a rival club after reportedly crying on the phone.

Throughout his years as a manager, Klopp has worked with some of the best players the world of football has to offer.

The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Marco Reus have all been under the guidance of Klopp.

However, there was one player who left Klopp heartbroken after joining a rival club.

Back in 2009, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Kevin Prince-Boateng was shipped out to Borussia Dortmund on loan.

Under Klopp, Prince-Boateng made 10 Bundesliga appearances as he played a part in helping Dortmund finish in sixth place.

As a result, Klopp wanted to sign Prince-Boateng on a permanent deal but Dortmund’s financial position made the transfer impossible.

Recalling his time working with Klopp on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast(via Liverpool Echo), Prince-Boateng said: “I said I will give my life for him. Every player would die for him on the pitch because he gives you that feeling of confidence, that feeling of love as well.

“I had like six, seven pounds [of weight] more. So he gave me that feeling, so I came [there] and performed.”

He continued: “It didn't work out. He called me personally and said we can't buy you, we don't have the money. We both cried on the phone. Like really cried. We had a very good relationship.”

Prince-Boateng ended up joining Dortmund’s rivals Schalke, Klopp reportedly sent a text to Prince-Boateng.

According to The Guardian, it read: “Why Schalke????????”

It was reported that the eight question marks were for emphasis when Klopp told the story himself.

Last week, Klopp shocked the world of football by confirming he will leave Liverpool at the end of the 23/24 season.

During his time as Reds boss, Klopp led the club to the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and the FA Community Shield.
