It hasn't taken long for Jordan Henderson to enter the history books at Ajax, with his transfer smashing a long-standing club record at the Eredivisie club.

Henderson, who made 19 appearances for Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq following a move from Liverpool last summer, has penned a two-and-half-year deal at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Taking to social media after the announcement was made, he commented on his much-talked-about Al Ettifaq departure after they agreed to terminate his contract to facilitate a move.

“I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect," he wrote. "It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family."

The England international added: “I want to take this opportunity to thank the club and the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from day one. I’ll keep watching and hoping for your success. Good luck for the future.”

Ajax, who currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie table following a poor start to the 2023/24 campaign, would soon put his number 6 jersey on the market. In fact, Henderson's shirt is already the fastest-selling player shirt in their history.

His shirt is believed to have surpassed previous record-holders Dusan Tadic and Daley Blind, with 'Henderson 6' being sold more times within 24 hours that the previously mentioned in a week.

A high volume of orders was expected given the player's status but not of this magnitude. “We rarely or never experience this,” a club source said.

Ajax boss John van 't Schip is delighted with the arrival of Henderson.

"We wanted an experienced midfielder with leadership qualities," he said. "Partially due to injuries in the team, we were looking for someone who could step in immediately. Jordan Henderson is that type of player.

"His arrival means a huge enhancement for our squad. Both on and off the pitch, a football player of this calibre is important for our many young players.

"He’s an English international player and has won the Champions League and many other prizes with Liverpool. I am happy he’s here, and I think it’s very good for our club that he’s an Ajacied from today onwards."
