James McClean breaks silence after fans slam Wrexham star for 'X-rated' song during promotion celebrations

Wrexham star James McClean has 'double downed' on his decision to join in on 'anti-monarchy' chants from Wrexham supporters following their promotion to League 1.

Wrexham entered the weekend's match aware that a victory could potentially secure their promotion to the third tier for the first time, while also relegating their opponents, Forest Green Rovers, back to the National League.

MK Dons needed a win to thwart the Welsh side's ambitions. Despite taking the lead against Mansfield, they suffered a comprehensive 4-1 defeat leaving it in Wrexham's hands.

Wrexham didn't miss their opportunity, delivering a stunning performance by defeating Forest Green 6-0 securing their historic promotion to League 1.

During the celebrations, Wrexham star McClean was involved in a rather controversial chant with the supporters regarding King Charles.

McClean has long faced backlash for his personal views, with many criticising his decision not to wear a poppy during his time in the Premier League.

Former Republic of Ireland international McClean, aged 34, admitted to joining in with some Wrexham supporters as they chanted about how he "hates the King."

McClean, who hails from Derry, the city that witnessed the tragic events of Bloody Sunday in 1972. On that day, British soldiers shot and killed thirteen civilian protestors, with another later dying from injuries.

The 34-year-old double-downed on his decision to join in with the chants via Instagram following the backlash.

"Is this correct? Absolutely and I also sang at the top of my lungs," He wrote.

McClean also refused to apologise for his actions despite the offense it caused due to many online.

"Do I make any apologies for doing so? Absolutely not," He added.

Wrexham are yet to comment on the controversy surrounding the incident.

The club had only welcomed Prince William to the Racecourse last month for St David's Day.

McClean has made 42 appearances and scored four goals since joining the north Wales club from Wigan last August.

The winger-turned-full-back signed a one-year contract with the option to extend beyond this season.
