Wrexham star James McClean has stunned fans with his latest social media activity.

McClean’s teammate, William Boyle, took to Instagram to announce that he had applied to be on the Professional Footballer’s Association players’ board.

Boyle said: “Through my own lived experiences I have found professional football an all-consuming environment. It can provide a powerful sense of belonging, connection and purpose while equally posing many challenges, notably for me around self-identity and self-understanding.

“I have utilised the PFA's various services throughout my career to date. These opportunities have allowed me to step out of the football bubble that I often find myself in and provided me with a different perspective.

The Wrexham defender continued: “I want to help the PFA continue to improve and push forward, by listening to and working with as many members as possible.”

Sharing Boyle’s statement on his own Instagram, McClean put an X-rated caption which read: “Having a big Willy is always a plus, so vote big Willy for PFA. @wboyle95.”

Reacting on social media, one fan said: “A unique pitch from James McClean to get Will Boyle onto the PFA players’ board.”

Another tweeted: “I laughed out loud for a solid minute! That’s a classic!”

McClean was handed the captain’s armband for the 24/25 season, speaking about the responsibility of the role, he said: “To be trusted with that role, for me, my motto has always been to work as hard as I can each day and never get out-worked.

“If that rubs off on all of the players then absolutely brilliant, because this team is built on hard work.”

McClean added: “For me to be given the armband and the opportunity to lead this team out then I feel it's a responsibility for me to make sure that I'm bang at it every game when it comes to setting the tone.”
