One EFL supporter was left horrified when he returned to his season ticket seat ahead of the new campaign.

Football fans up and down the country have been revelling in the return of football over the past 24 hours.

But for one fan, his day was dealt a severe blow before a ball had been even kicked...

Scott Byers, a season ticket holder at Gillingham, arrived in good time to watch his side take on Carlisle in League Two.

What he didn't expect was for his seat at Priestfield to no long be there and instead replaced by just fittings in the floor.

"Paid for my Gills season ticket… turn up today for the first game and there’s no seats," Byers joked on social media.

One supporter quickly replied, adding: "That's shocking mate."

Byers explained further context around the situation, adding how was left to feel helpless ahead of the game.

"Speechless mate. When I spoke to the steward he said ‘look out for some other seats for this week'

As you can image, football supporters up and down the country quickly poked fun at the Gills' fans misfortune.

"I wouldn’t stand for that," wrote one on social media.

"Did you pay by standing order?" said another.

"I wouldn’t take this sitting down, mate," as the jokes continued to roll in.

Gillingham, are yet to comment, after beating Carlisle 4-1 on the opening day of the new season.

Goals from Timothee Dieng, Jacob Wakeling, Jack Nolan and Jonny Williams made sure of the victory on home soil.

Mark Bonner's side finished 12th in League Two last season but will be hoping to push on after a strong start to the campaign.

As for supporter Byles, who knows whether his seat will soon return when he next arrives at Priestfield.

The Kent-based outfit are due to take on Chesterfield at the end of the month, so we do hope all is resolved by then!
