Gerard Pique will forever be remembered fondly by Spanish fans as he helped his nation win their first World Cup in 2010, with many of that squad being viewed as some of the greatest footballers to have ever played the sport; however, the former Barcelona star believes there are three in the current team that could become better than his former teammates.
The Andorra FC owner was a vital part of the Spain team that beat the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup final, as Andres Iniesta scored the goal that allowed Spain to join the illustrious list of nations to win the famous competition.
Now, in 2026, Luis de la Fuente can lead La Roja to their second success in the competition, but they will have to overcome three-time champions Argentina.
Speaking to AS Diario, Pique believes that Spain are the best team in the world at present, after witnessing their dominant performance against France in the semi-final and he believes they should be favourites for this clash.

The three-time Champions League winner believes that while his 2010 team were underdogs for the final against the Dutch, he thought they had an ‘aura’ and ‘charisma’ around them in comparison to this current Spanish team; however, he does believe there are three standout players who could be better than those in the history-making team.

Pique said: “They're very similar. Many say that the 2010 Spain team has much more aura, much more charisma than this one, but that's said after 16 years and with the benefit of hindsight. But when we arrived at the 2010 World Cup, we weren't the favourites to win, especially after losing to Switzerland; nobody gave us a chance.
“I'm convinced that the current team, with Pedri, Lamine [Yamal], [Pau] Cubarsi, and so on, will be as good as or better than the 2010 team, but they need more time.”
It is interesting to note that the three individuals that the former defender named were all current Barcelona players, the club in which he lifted the La Liga title on nine occasions.
The trio have already been successful at both international as they won the La Liga title this season, with both Pedri and Yamal winning the 2024 European Championship with Spain.
