Ashley Young's dream may come true during FA Cup tie between Everton and Peterborough and it would be history-making

"These are the kind of stories the FA Cup does bring up and it would be another good one."

"I’m hoping and praying that it could be in the next couple of years," said Ashley Young in October last year. "To play alongside him or play against him would be unbelievable."

Two months ago, the idea of coming up against his 18-year-old son in a professional match was merely a pipedream but on Thursday night, Ashley could potentially go toe-to-toe with Tyler in a battle of the Youngs at Goodison Park.

That's right. If the scenario does play out, then Everton full-back Ashley Young will potentially swap shirts with Peterborough midfielder Tyler Young – a moment that would mark the first father-and-son pair to come up against each other in FA Cup history.

Shortly after Everton were pitted against the League One side, Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson gave his take on the potential father-and-son meeting.

"I don't think it's ever happened," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. "Ash has put me under a bit of pressure there. I'll have to find a way of getting Tyler involved."

Ferguson added: "It's a great story; let's deal with that when it comes around. Ash is still playing, he's had a fantastic career and now Tyler is just starting his.

Before the draw was made, former Manchester United and Watford winger Young opened up on the possibility of facing his son.

"Obviously to play alongside my son would be a dream come true," he told talkSPORT. "You see LeBron [James, with his son Bronny] in basketball. I’ve done my homework, it hasn't been done since 1980 I think, which is obviously a long time ago."

As mentioned earlier, Ashley and Tyler would become the first father-and-son pair to come up against each other in the FA Cup if it happens.

However, it wouldn't be the first a father and son have played in the same match. Back in 1951, Alex and David Herd played in the same team for Stockport County in a game against Hartlepool.

And back in 1996, former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen replaced his father Arnor when he made his much-anticipated debut for Iceland.

Last year, Tyler Young made his senior debut for Peterborough in their EFL Cup win over Stevenage. In fact, Young was nominated for the Player of the Match award following an impressive cameo at the Weston Homes Stadium.

After being released by Arsenal following a near decade-long spell at the Gunners, the teenager penned a one-year deal at Peterborough following a brief trial period in the summer.

Let's hope the magic of the cup delivers once more on Thursday night.
