Simon Jordan offers alternative point of view on European Super League news, fans are in complete agreement

A completely different take on the European Super League has been provided after Thursday's news.

Simon Jordan has reacted to news of the European Super League returning, providing an alternative viewpoint to most.

Initial plans for the ESL were shelved back in April 2021 when a slew of clubs backed away following monumental backlash from supporters.

But on Thursday morning, the European Court of Justice opened up the possibility of proceedings being relaunched when they sided with the ESL and ruled that the intervention from FIFA and UEFA broke competition law.

This outcome was then followed by A22 Sports Management unveiling plans for the project.

The company shared their proposal for a breakaway competition which would feature a 64-team men's tournament across three divisions and a 32-team women's tournament and be played in midweek, with promotion and relegation.

Naturally the plans have not been received well by the majority of fans, but former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan cannot understand the negative reaction.

"I think most of the grown ups in the room knew this was going to be an outcome that was going to be put back into play," he said on talkSPORT.

"Because when you get out of football and into the legal system and you look at anti-competition and monopoly, you are always going to find yourself in a situation where governing bodies that are monopolising the commercial revenue streams of European football, are going to be challenged legally.

"No one has had the chutzpah to do it previously. Football's on a different journey and I really don't understand what all the furore is all about.

"Put aside the initial reaction of the lack of meritocracy because that was the only issue on the table, all the hysteria and the call to action for the fans to get involved, was only ever about one thing - the lack of ability to get in there on you competitive achievements.

"Once that is removed, where's the hysteria? No-one knows what this European Super League consists of.

"No-one knows that it prejudices the domestic landscape anyway than the creation of Premier League prejudiced the English football pyramid.

"Anyone thinking they’d prefer FIFA and UEFA to have complete control must be deranged!”

Jordan is known for his controversial takes but plenty online agreed with his points.

One said: "Agreed Fifa and Uefa have shown themselves to be corrupt to the core. Open competition has to be better for the game."

Another user commented: "This is a good analysis."

A third added: "Hate when I agree with him."

A fourth replied: "I totally agree with Simon Jordan on this. People forget that there was something called division one for over a hundred years before 1992. Things change."

Still, Manchester United, who were initially founding members, are one of many clubs to have distanced themselves from plans.

FIFA and UEFA have both said the decision does not change anything going forward, while the government in the UK have pledged to ban any Premier League clubs who become involved.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of the driving forces behind the return of the ESL.
