Fans are shocked after learning about the prize money for the Europa Conference League winners.

Greek outfit Olympiacos and Serie A side Fiorentina compete in tonight's Europa Conference League final.

Olympiacos beat Aston Villa to reach the final, which takes place in Athens, Greece, while Fiorentina defeated Club Brugge to book their spot.

But the winner of this season's Europa Conference League is set to earn just €5 million (£4.3 million) in prize money.

The runner-up will pocket €3 million (£2.6 million).

The prize money for Europe's third tier club competition sent social media wild as fans argued whether it's worth the efforts.

One X user wrote: "Very small beer in the great scheme of things. One has to wonder whether it's worth the risk of player injury and fatigue?"

A second argued: "The prize money is nothing in comparison to the actual trophy."

A third added: "Doesn't even cover two players wages."

Fiorentina, who lost to West Ham United in last season's Europa Conference League final, will be looking for redemption when they face Olympiacos and Italian football expert James Olympiacos believes they have all the motivation required to claim this season's trophy.

"There's this reputation Fiorentina has of being absurdly unlucky in Europe, particularly in European finals going back to the 1960s," he told TNT Sports.

"Aside from the problems that Olympiacos pose as a team, when Fiorentina learned they were playing a team from Athens in the final, it was like going into the lion's den.

"Even though they're not playing at their own stadium in Piraeus, it's essentially a home final for them. You are going to be playing against a pretty hostile atmosphere, even with the allocation which Fiorentina has which is between 7,000 and 8,000. So, managing that kind of occasion is going to be big.

"Jose Luis Mendilibar - who won the Europa League with Sevilla last year - has done an extraordinary job with Olympiacos to get them this far.

"But Fiorentina will have to lay to rest the demons of last year. They were the better side against West Ham at the final in Prague.

"I think that losing both the Coppa Italia final and Europa Conference League final last season was another motivating factor to go back to this final and make amends."
