Fans have noticed that Jeremie Frimpong doesn't sing the national anthem of the Netherlands and now they have worked out why.

Frimpong enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring nine goals and setting up nine more as his side stormed to the Bundesliga title.

Frimpong was an unused member of the Netherlands squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, but his performances in 2023-24 convinced national team coach Ronald Koeman to give him minutes at a major tournament.

The 23-year-old came off the bench in his side's opening game win against Poland, before he was brought into the starting XI for a goalless draw with France.

Fans and neutrals alike were delighted to see the talented youngster handed his first tournament start, although there was some confusion when Frimpong and his teammates lined up for the national anthem before kick-off.

TV viewers noticed that Frimpong didn't sing the anthem before the France match, and now they've worked out why: He doesn't speak much Dutch.

That might seem strange for someone who was born in Amsterdam, but Frimpong has previously explained why he hasn't mastered the Dutch language.

"It was English that was spoken in the house when I was growing up," he told GOAL before he had made his national team debut.

"That and the Ghanaian language called Twi. My mum would normally speak that to me, but my brothers and sisters all speak English.

"I'm still working on my Dutch. I know how to speak it a little. If I do play for the national team, I will try to learn it."

Frimpong was seven years old when he and his five siblings moved to England with their mother.

The Dutchman spent much of his upbringing in Manchester, where he developed his English but had little opportunity to practice Dutch.

He joined Manchester City's academy at the age of nine and left the club at 18 to join Scottish giants Celtic.

Frimpong could have elected to represent England or Ghana at international level, but he decided to play for the country of his birth.

On social media, fans expressed their disbelief that Frimpong didn't sing the Dutch national anthem before the France match.

"Frimpong doesn't know the anthem man..." one fan wrote on X, while another commented: "Frimpong was BAFFLED with the national anthem."

A third fan said: "Frimpong is unintentionally hilarious man. The way he’s just standing there not knowing a word of his teams national anthem."

Jeremie Frimpong's representatives have been contacted for comment.
