Some England fans felt two players aimed a dig at Gareth Southgate on the back of Lee Carsley's final match in charge as interim boss.

The Three Lions were back in UEFA Nations League action on Sunday evening as they welcomed the Republic of Ireland to Wembley.

England knew they had to match the result of the Finland vs Greece match in order to secure their status as group winners.

Carsley's men were in fine form as goals from Harry Kane, Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis sealed a 5-0 win for England.

As a result, the Three Lions will be promoted back to League A after finishing top of the group.

After the match, a few England stars took to social media to pay tribute to Carsley, who is set to be replaced by Thomas Tuchel as England boss.

However, fans felt duo Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish may have aimed a little dig at former boss Southgate.

Bellingham wrote: "Huge thanks to Lee and his staff for their work in these last few camps.

"Got my smile back in an England shirt, very grateful."

Meanwhile, Manchester City star Grealish posted: "What a guy & manager! Absolute legend and thank you for bringing back the enjoyment in an England shirt."

Reacting on social media, one fan said: "Jude Bellingham & Jack Grealish both taking digs at Gareth Southgate on Instagram?"

Another tweeted: "Indirect at Southgate?"

A third fan added: "Southgate catching strays there."

Speaking after the match, Carsley said: "There's a bit of relief, because we were expected to get promotion. I've found it challenging. But it was a strong performance. I'm trying to put together a debriefing.

"I'll put together a document and go meet him [Tuchel], and present him with what I think, and what we've found. Our job is to help him as much we can. I'll look forward to meeting him in the next few weeks."

He added: "The pool of players has increased. I'll give him as much information as he needs.

"I've enjoyed it in parts. The games have always been the best bit. I'm still gutted about the Greece game at home. If anything, I'm not thinking about the five wins, it's the one we lost."
