Frank Lampard gave an interesting response when he was asked to choose between iconic Premier League midfielders Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes.

Lampard, 47, is currently head coach of Championship side Coventry City but was once captain of Chelsea as well as an England international.

At his peak, the three-time Premier League winner was arguably one of the greatest midfielders to have played in the division and finished his career with 11 major honours at Chelsea – three Premier League titles, four FA Cup crowns, two League Cups, the Champions League and Europa League - to go alongside several individual accolades.

His name is often mentioned and debated alongside Liverpool and Man United legends Gerrard and Scholes, as well as Keane.

But who does Lampard think was best out of the aforementioned trio?

Speaking to the Irish Independent back in 2017, the former Chelsea skipper gave his thoughts and put one player above the rest.

“Steven Gerrard in the Premier League,” Lampard said when asked who the finest midfielder he faced in the English top flight was.

“He had everything and if you got him on his day, you could almost forget about it.

“He was so powerful as a player, particularly when he went up to Anfield. You knew if Steven was on his game in the first three minutes because he will crash through someone.

“He had everything, top ability. He was a great all round midfield player.”

Lampard then switched his attention to the best players he faced outside of domestic competition.

“If you look in Europe, I’d have to say Xavi [Hernandez] and [Andres] Iniesta,” he added. “Going to the Nou Camp and trying to get near them was very tough.”

Recently, Gerrard was asked to pick between Keane, Patrick Vieira, and Lampard during a Q&A with fan but put the former Arsenal skipper above Lampard.

“I think to complement my game, to make me better, the one that suits my game better to play with would be Roy Keane,” Gerrard said.

“They’re all fantastic players… all high quality, but Frank very similar [to me].”

He added: “Vieira [had] similarities as well as a little bit. But he [Keane] is more like Dietmar Hamann, [Javier] Mascherano and [would] help me get forward.”
