On Sunday, Chelsea were beaten in the first major final of the season after a late Virgil van Dijk header sealed a 1-0 victory for Liverpool.

During the trophy presentation, when Fernandez and his Chelsea teammates were walking up the stairs to collect their silver medal, the Argentine midfielder had to be restrained after being mocked by a Liverpool fan.

As Fernandez walked past, the fan was heard saying: “Unlucky lad,” before bursting into laughter.

After stopping for a second or two, the Chelsea midfielder was ushered up the steps by his teammate.

Sunday’s triumph was the 10th League Cup that Liverpool have won in their history.

Speaking after the match, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said: “In my 20 years, this is easily the most special trophy. I couldn't care less about my legacy. I was not here to create one. This was so special.

“What happened here was absolutely insane, these things are not possible. The team, a squad, an academy full of character. I am so proud I could be part of that tonight.”

He added: “The craziest thing is, we deserved it. We had lucky moments, they had lucky moments. The boys showed up, it was really cool.”

Match winner Van Dijk said: “It's all for the fans, so let's enjoy it. An intense game for both sides, they had chances, we had chances. Amazing. First trophy as Liverpool captain.

“We did a job, even with all the problems we have had before the game. I'm so proud, proud to be part of this club and especially proud of the boys.”

Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday night when they welcome Southampton to Anfield in the FA Cup fifth round.
