Arsenal have been forced to change the name of their stadium for tonight's Champions League clash against AS Monaco and here's why.

The Gunners resume their Champions League campaign at home to French side Monaco on Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta's side have 10 points on the board, having won three of their five European fixtures this season, impressively beating Sporting 5-1 in their last outing.

Ahead of the Champions League group stage match, fans tuning in will notice a change to the name of Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

The stadium will go by a different name because of a little-known UEFA rule.

The Emirates Stadium will be referred to as the Arsenal Stadium.

UEFA does not recognise stadium sponsors under their specific rules regarding sponsorships.

This also impacts fellow Premier League side Manchester City, with the Etihad listed under its original name of The City of Manchester Stadium for European competition.

The sponsorship rules have also led to clubs changing their names to comply with regulations.

Austria's Red Bull Salzburg are known as FC Salzburg in European competition and use a modified crest to adhere to the strict rules.

Speaking ahead of the Arsenal Stadium showdown, Mikel Arteta told the club's official website: "We’re coming up now against a very good team in Monaco, they’re doing incredibly well and they are so used to it because we play every three days against this kind of opposition, so yeah, it’s learning about certain things and scenarios because the Champions League in different in certain ways, but there are similarities in the way that we have to compete day in, day out in the league."

As it stands, Arsenal sit in 10th place in the Champions League standings.

Their victory over Sporting saw them return to the win column in the competition following their 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan last month.
