The UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint Germain and Inter Milan has already made history prior to kick-off.

On Saturday night, all eyes will be fixated on the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany as PSG and Inter battle to become the kings of Europe.

French giants PSG are looking to win the competition for the first time, with Inter hoping to win their first since 2010.

Heading into the mouth-watering Champions League final, a piece of history was already made before a ball was even kicked.

It was confirmed that Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will officiate the match between PSG and Inter.

According to the UEFA website, Kovacs is set to make history by becoming the first man to have taken charge of the final of every UEFA major club competition.

Back in 2022, Kovacs took charge of the Conference League final.

The Romanian was then the man in the middle for the 23/24 Europa League final between Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta.

Kovacs also officiated two matches at EURO 2024.

UEFA said: "It will make Kovács the first man to have refereed the final of each of UEFA's current major club competitions, having taken charge of the inaugural Conference League final in 2022."

Reacting to the news, Kovacs said: "It was amazing to receive the call from [UEFA managing director for refereeing] Roberto Rosetti. It was a very happy call, and it's an overwhelming feeling after so many years of hard work, to be awarded the biggest club competition match in the world.

"At the start of every season, you dream of refereeing a final, the Champions League is the biggest thing you can achieve, and I am very pleased, not just for me, but for my colleagues as well."

He added: "I'd like to thank UEFA, the Referees Committee, the Romanian Football Federation, and everybody who has helped us along the way, in particular our referees chairman, Kyros Vassaras, who has done a fantastic job over the past eleven years, and my mentor, István Szilágyi who has been with me since I started refereeing."
