Old Firm derby ends in chaos after Celtic player 'struck by coin' as police forced to intervene

Arne Engels was struck by an object in the closing stages of the Old Firm clash on Thursday.

The Old Firm showdown ended in chaos as Celtic's Arne Engels was struck by a coin in the closing stages of the match.

Celtic midfielder Engels collapsed to the ground clutching his head after being hit by an object thrown from the Rangers end at Ibrox.

Players from both sides ran over to the scene of the incident as the linesman retrieved an object from the floor before passing it onto match referee Don Robertson.

Engels, who was a second-half substitute, carried on after receiving treatment and thankfully avoided any serious injury.

The referee then passed the coin - thought to be a £1 coin - to the fourth official, who handed it over to a policeman inside the stadium.

The policeman bagged the object before the game resumed.

"Absolutely ridiculous," Chris Sutton bemoaned on commentary while co-commentator Neil McCann added: "That is disgusting. There is no place for that in football."

Rangers, meanwhile, claimed a famous win over their local rivals, winning Thursday's game 3-0.

Ianis Hagi opened the scoring in the seventh minute, with the hosts bagging two second-half goals to secure all three points and bragging rights.

Robin Propper doubled his side's lead before Danilo netted nine minutes from time.

It's a first Old Firm derby triumph at the seventh attempt for Philippe Clement, who eases the pressure on his position.

Rangers, however, remain 11 points adrift of Celtic, who suffer their first league defeat of the season.

After the result, Hoops legend Sutton said his old side only have themselves to blame for their woeful display.

On X, he wrote: "No complaints. Celtic as flat as anything. Rangers deserved it and were better in every department. It’s a testament to Brendan Rodgers and the team the run they’ve been on and the standards set. Never a bad thing to get a reality check. Winning titles is hard. Still work to do..."
