Ben Foster left football fans stunned after naming his pick for the current best goalkeeper in world football.

Former Manchester United and England goalkeeper Foster, 41, retired from the game back in 2023 and has since enjoyed success in the media with his 'Cycling GK' YouTube channel.

The ex-Watford goalkeeper has welcomed plenty of high-profile guests that include Troy Deeney and Aaron Ramsdale.

In a recent episode Foster, who made over 400 senior appearances during his professional career, was asked to name his current number one between the sticks and left some supporters scratching their heads with his pick.

He went for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, instead of the likes of Real Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois and Liverpool's Alisson.

"We are talking about the two best goalies in the world right now," Foster began when asked for his choices.

"Alisson and Emi Martinez, and I went, I am gonna go for Emi Martinez.

"For me, [he is] the best goalie in the world. At any one game, if I had to pick a goalie, I will have Emi Martinez.

"Liverpool fans, please don't hate me for this, as I think Alisson is the second best in the world.

"I am not saying he is rubbish, I am saying Emi Martinez is probably just ahead of him at this moment in time.

"But that is what you get when you have a world-class goalkeeper in goal for you, he makes saves like he did in the game as well."

Martinez has enjoyed individual success over the last few years, after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with Argentina.

He also claimed the Golden Glove award at that tournament and has picked up the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the best goalkeeper in the world, in both 2023 and 2024.

Martinez helped Aston Villa claim a point on Wednesday night against Premier League leaders Liverpool, making a key interception from Darwin Nunez during the 2-2 draw at Villa Park.

Speaking in October after his second Yashin Trophy win, Martinez said: "It's crazy to have received this award for the second year in a row. I never imagined receiving it once, let alone twice.

"I still can't believe it."

Fans were quick to react to Foster's comments on TikTok, with many disagreeing with the former goalkeeper.

"Martinez is so overrated," posted one fan.

Another added: "Martinez makes some great saves but he is prone to mistakes."

While a third wrote: "From a former pro I'm shocked! Martinez makes some sickening errors and his positioning is suspect."
