Viktor Gyokeres 'close' to reaching agreement with his next club as 'record-breaking' fee revealed

Viktor Gyokeres is set to become the most expensive Swedish player in football history.

Viktor Gyokeres is 'close' to reaching an agreement with his next club, according to stunning reports.

Gyokeres has dominated the summer transfer window, having been linked with several of Europe's heavyweights, including Manchester United and Juventus.

But the Swede's preferred destination is Arsenal, who are hellbent on acquiring a new No.9 this summer.

Mikel Arteta wants to bring in a forward ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, identifying Gyokeres.

And it appears a deal is nearing completion in what would be a 'record-breaking' transfer.

According to Portuguese outlet Maisfutebol, Arsenal will close an agreement with Sporting CP for Gyokeres today (July 6).

The deal could reach €80 million (£69 million), which would make him the most expensive Swedish player in football history, surpassing transfers involving Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexander Isak.

His proposed transfer to Arsenal beats Ibrahimovic's switch from Inter Milan to Barcelona (£57 million) and Isak's move from Real Sociedad to Newcastle United (£63 million).

David Ornstein also claims the Gunners are in 'advanced talks' with Sporting CP as personal terms are in place on a five-year contract.

Gyokeres has attracted plenty of interest following his goal-scoring exploits at Sporting CP.

He scored 43 goals in his debut campaign at the club following his transfer from Coventry City before bagging an impressive 54 goals last season.

Gyokeres has never played in the Premier League despite previously being on the books at Brighton. He played eight games for the club but never featured in the league.

The 27-year-old made his name in the Championship with Coventry, netting 38 goals in 91 matches before signing for Sporting.

Arsenal are seemingly on the verge of getting their man.

Speaking during last season, Arteta 'promised' a big summer of spending.

"Now we want to increase the depth of the squad, but as well we want to increase the quality and the skills that we need to go to the next step," he said. "It's going to be a big one and we are very excited about it."

Arsenal have signed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea and midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Sociedad this summer.

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is also on Arteta's radar.
