Alan Shearer would have taken Sky Sports 'off the air' had his text message to Mark Chapman been read out during the broadcast of the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle United beat Liverpool 2-1 to win this season's Carabao Cup.

Dan Burn opened the scoring with a powerful header before Alexander Isak doubled his side's lead. Federico Chiesa pulled one back late on following a VAR review.

A host of celebrities and Newcastle legends were in the crowd at Wembley Stadium, including Ant and Dec as Clive Tyldesley left viewers in stitches with his comment on commentary.

Newcastle great Shearer also watched on as he was shown during Sunday's broadcast.

Shearer was picked up by the match cameras as Newcastle fans cheered his appearance on the big screen.

After the result, Chapman revealed on air that he had texted the Premier League icon about the game.

He joked that he received a message that would have taken Sky Sports off the air.

"You can see Shearer on the big screen here, which is why they are cheering," Chapman explained during Sky Sports' coverage of Newcastle's post-match celebrations.

"About 15 minutes ago, I texted him, 'Are you calm?' I can't tell you what he replied; it will have us taken off the air."

Shearer summed up his emotions following Newcastle's triumph with his posts on social media.

"Toon Toon arrrmyyyyyyyyy. Ah man. Did the Geordies deserve that or what That was f**king amazing," he wrote on X.

In another post, he added: "I know I’m p**sed but ……. Liverpool are a great club and will win the league and have been brilliant this season but the Geordies absolutely smashed them today and deserved it…."

Shearer scored an impressive 206 goals for Newcastle but never won a major trophy during his spell at the club.

But he took in his old side's Carabao Cup success over Liverpool.
