Kylian Mbappe was on the verge of completing a transfer to Real Madrid before football's postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Paris Saint-Germain superstar has been linked with a move to Spain for some time and Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is a huge fan.

One of Zidane's former teammates, Jerome Rothen, has revealed that a deal to bring the 21-year-old to La Liga was close to completion.

"I know from club sources that a deal to take Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid was almost done," Rothen, who won two titles during his six years at PSG, told Radio Montecarlo per Goal.

"But with what has been happening, I'm sure that Mbappe's arrival at Real Madrid will be postponed."

Rothen then went on to add: "There is no way that Mbappe will extend his contract with PSG.

"They will have an agreement between them in place because PSG agreed to let him go this summer. In my opinion, it's just a question of time."

Mbappe's contract at PSG runs until 2022 but he has refused to commit his future to the French side.

Madrid's admiration for the World Cup winner is strong and Zidane praised Mbappe ahead of his side's Champions League clash with PSG last year.

"You know that I have known him for a long time," Zidane said back in November. "I am already in love with him, firstly as a person, because he came to do a trial here a long time ago."

PSG sporting director Leonardo was asked about Zidane's flirting after their 2-2 draw.

"Did he say that? I hadn't seen anything!" the Brazilian joked, per Goal.

"The only thing I know is that Mbappe is 100 per cent staying here. The rest is by the by.

"We are moving slowly [on a new contract] but we are going forward."

Despite Mbappe's breathtaking talent and status as one of the world's brightest prospects, he has managed to irritate coach Thomas Tuchel this season.

He's been substituted numerous times and kicked up a fuss when taking his place on the bench.
