The Cristiano Ronaldo effect, perhaps?

Real Madrid have broke an unwanted nine-year record in their La Liga encounter with Getafe last night.

Los Blancos got off to a winning start in their new season, with Gareth Bale stepping up his game and really giving the impression that his form will shine now that Cristiano Ronaldo left to Juventus.

But, according to a report in the Independent, only 48,466 supporters were in attendance at the home match, the lowest figure at the Bernabeu for nine years.

What's strange, too, is the last game that figures were that low was their 3-1 win over Mallorca in the final game of the 2008/09 season. This was the last game before Ronaldo made the switch from Manchester United and took the Spanish side by storm, becoming arguably their greatest ever player.

Madrid man Nacho Fernandez was asked about the departure of Ronaldo following the win, and whether Bale now has something to prove.

"Bale does not have to fill Ronaldo's shoes, they are two different players," he said.

"Ronaldo's time here was an era and he was very important to us, but Gareth is his own player and very important too, he does not need to prove his worth to anyone here."Everybody here is with Gareth including all the players, coaches and the fans - he is very happy at Madrid and he is playing like that, full of confidence.
