Atletico Madrid have knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League 4-2 on aggregate following a 3-2 victory at Anfield after extra-time.

Liverpool side managed to take the game to extra time after going 1-0 ahead through a Georginio Wijnaldum header.

Roberto Firmino scored during extra-time to give Jurgen Klopp's side hope at progression.

However, Atletico substitute Marcos Llorente stunned Anfield with a double off the bench.

Alvaro Morata netted in the dying moments to seal the away side's progression to the quarter-finals.

Fans have reacted to the current holders being eliminated from the competition.

Diego Simeone's side soaked up pressure all game and Liverpool were relentless in their attacks.

Liverpool managed to open the scoring just before half time through Wijnaldum.

The hosts battered Atletico in the second half and Jan Oblak made a string of quality saves to deny Jurgen Klopp's side.

Atletico thought they'd won the game in injury time after a header from Saul Niguez which set Simeone off down the touchline.

However, the goal was ruled offside and the two sides went to extra-time.

Anfield was bouncing four minutes into extra time after Firmino's header cannoned off the post and back into the Brazilian's path, who then tapped home to give his side a 2-0 lead on the night and 2-1 lead on aggregate.

However, Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian made a costly mistake four minutes later after a stray pass saw Atletico regain the ball and lay off to Llorente who fired home.

The 25-year-old then stunned Anfield into silence by scoring his second of the game less than ten minutes later.

Morata managed to net his side's third after a counter attack late on to seal the victory.

The Spaniards' defence had been under siege all game but they managed to punish Liverpool's mistakes and advance in the competition.
