Andy Carroll has emerged from lockdown sporting the worst beard ever - with the Newcastle United striker opting to rock mutton chops.

The Magpies are taking on Sheffield United at St James' Park this afternoon and Carroll is back on the bench.

Newcastle tweeted an image of the forward prior to kick-off and it gave fans the chance to see his brand new look.

The 31-year-old is known for his unique fashion sense and his ponytail hairstyle has become an important part of his image.

Fans have reacted to the beard and they've made some hilarious comparisons.

Carroll rejoined Newcastle in the summer but it hasn't been the dream return he will have hoped for.

He's yet to score in his second stint with club and has been limited to just four starts in the Premier League.

Carroll's inclusion on the bench this afternoon is his first involvement since a 1-1 draw with Wolves back in January.

However, the England international has reportedly agreed terms on a new contract with Steve Bruce's side.

The Daily Mirror have reported the contract will include appearance-related terms as a way to reduce his wage costs if he is out injured.

Carroll's current wage packet is a £20,000-a-week basic salary, which increases by £35,000 or £75,000 should he come off the bench or start respectively.

Newcastle United and Sheffield United are currently tied at 0-0 going into half-time.
