Fans are outraged after Fikayo Tomori was sent off in controversial fashion against former club Chelsea in the Champions League.

After losing 3-0 at Stamford Bridge last week, AC Milan hosted the Blues at the San Siro and made a fairly bright start to proceedings.

But then things went downhill very quickly for the Serie A champions in the 18th minute.

Mason Mount got in behind his former Chelsea colleague and after being caught out, Tomori put his hand on the England international's shoulder in a bid to thwart him.

Mount just about kept his balance and got his shot away, seeing Ciprian Tatarusanu save his effort and barely offering an appeal.

However, the referee immediately gestured for a penalty and gave Tomori a straight red card.

The 24-year-old was utterly perplexed by the decision and protested the call along with many of his teammates.

VAR reviewed the incident but the on-field decision remained. Jorginho dispatched the spot-kick to put Chelsea ahead but supporters felt the dismissal was incredibly harsh:

NEVER A RED https://t.co/AIeGUvCp0r

How on earth is this a red https://t.co/zPF7Oui1BN

Slowly giving up with football, never a red card in a million years https://t.co/fp71S4i5xG

This is NOT a red card, Tomori shouldn’t have been sent off. A yellow card would have been fair. https://t.co/XI03VemmD1

These Champions League referees are sick. In what universe is that a straight red? Absolutely ridiculous decision. https://t.co/4Wbwz0Zjha

That is an absolute disgrace. https://t.co/xaH2BMQOcx

Games gone if that's a pen & red card 🙃 https://t.co/nCwcqw78Mb

Game's gone. How is that even a red... https://t.co/qFtrzwRPBv

— ben (@benfullerrr) October 11, 2022

How is that a red? It’s only a red if it was a clear denial of a goal scoring opportunity, eg a handball on the line. This is literally barely a pen? https://t.co/7N1begoaXf

— Tank 🐙 (@CalmLikeVanDijk) October 11, 2022

That isn’t a red though is it let’s be honest https://t.co/NRMIR9hL07

Mason Mount literally shakes off that tackle and tries to meg Tatarusanu, but the referee decided it was a dangerous challenge and sent Tomori off. If only football had cricket-like, accountable decision review systems. https://t.co/wOoUuPIdFc

Refs lost the plot, no chance that’s a red for Tomori.

Chelsea doubled their lead in the 34rd minute through former Milan academy player Aubameyang, who notched his third goal for the club since joining from Barcelona in the summer.

In addition to the red card, Milan also had three players receive cautions as German referee Daniel Siebert got unbelievably card happy.

What a slick move! 💫

His actions angered the home fans, who whistled and jeered at every foul that went against them.

Rossoneri boss Stefano Pioli was furious with the red card, but the most priceless reaction went to injured goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who delivered some serious meme potential.
