Michael Carrick Reveals What David Moyes Said To Manchester United Squad

Michael Carrick Reveals What David Moyes Said To Manchester United Squad

David Moyes time at Manchester United wasn't exactly the most successful managerial stint in the history of football and Michael Carrick has revealed what he told players when he joined.

There's a big quirk of football that David Moyes contract at Manchester United technically doesn't run out till the end of this season and yet the Red Devils could still sack their second manager since the Scot before it ends.

Moyes signed a six year deal when Sir Alex Ferguson retired and announced that his replacement was leaving Everton to head for Manchester but he lasted less than a season in charge before he was sacked.

Things haven't gone brilliantly since Moyes term either with neither Louis van Gaal or Jose Mourinho able to get close to replicating Fergie's success.

But Moyes was certainly the worst of the trio and the furthest fall from one season to the next considering United's legendary boss had delivered the Premier League title in his last year.

In his new autobiography, Between the Lines, Michael Carrick revealed one of the first things Moyes said to the team, which wouldn't have been well received, writing:

"I got on fine with David. Never had a bad word with him, never fell out with him. He arrived full of energy and ideas for how to improve us.

Sir Alex Ferguson Tried To Sign Edinson Cavani For Manchester United On Behalf Of David Moyes In 2014

"I remember at one of his first meetings, David said to us, 'I believe I can make you better. I know you won the league last year and I've obviously been watching you. I can make you run more.'

"Being fair to David, he was looking for a chink, like what needed improving and where we were weak, so that he could take us to another level.

"I just think what he said didn't come across the right way."

It's not exactly the best way to ingratiate yourself with a new team, especially when they're the champions and you've not actually won anything as a manager.

Of course it's not quite Brian Clough's famous speech when he first joined Leeds United, taking over from Don Revie, with the legendary Nottingham Forest boss saying, according to film Damned United, "You lot may all be internationals, and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Don Revie. But as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is chuck all your medals and all your caps and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest f*cking dustbin you can find. Because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by cheating."

It's mad to think that Moyes is just coming to an end of his six year deal, in an alternate universe. Still it could be worse, Alan Pardew has 18 months left of his eight year deal at Newcastle.
