Michael Carrick has explained the reason why he has been absent from the Manchester United squad for over two months.

The 36-year old, who signed a one-year extension in May this year and had a testimonial to recognise his efforts for the club, was appointed club captain following the departure of Wayne Rooney to Everton.

However, he has only made a solitary appearance this season - that coming in the Carabao Cup against Burton Albion back on 20 September.

But in a statement released on his official social media channels, the England international has revealed that after the win at Old Trafford, a series of tests found that he had an irregular heartbeat - leading to him having minor heart surgery.

The statement reads:

"I just want to clear up my situation as I've had quite a few people asking if I'm OK and why I haven't been fit over the last couple of months.

"After feeling strange during the second half of the Burton game in September, I underwent a series of tests. It turned out to be due to an irregular heart rhythm which has been fully investigated and I had a procedure called a cardiac ablation. I had to build up training steadily whilst being monitored closely but I feel fine now.

"I would like to reassure everyone that I'm healthy and back training hard with the team. I'm building up my fitness and aiming to be back in contention for selection soon

Carrick says he "felt strange" during the 4-1 win and was then required to have a procedure called a 'Cardiac ablation'.

The treatment has been successful, and after gradually building up his fitness, the former West Ham and Tottenham midfielder says he "feels fine" now and is back training with the squad as normal. He also says he is "aiming to be back in contention" soon.

As per Paul Hirst from The Times, Carrick has also been suffering from a calf injury, in addition to the heart issue.

Here's hoping we see Carrick back on the pitch in next to no time.
