Fabrizio Romano accused of lying by a player in outspoken tweet

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has been accused of lying by a player, who took to Twitter to call him out.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has been accused of lying about information by a player on social media.

Romano, who has 14.7 million followers on Twitter, is one of the most respected sources for transfer news and sleeps from 5am until 10am during the transfer window to get all the gossip.

He tends to know what's happening before anyone else does but a bit of news posted on Thursday morning was disputed by the player who it was involving.

Romano reported that Jose Cifuentes, who plays for Los Angeles FC in the MLS, was nearing a move to Scottish side Rangers.

He claimed "talks are progressing to crucial stages" and there were meetings between representatives and the club.

However, the midfielder has emphatically denied that he is on his way to Rangers. The 24-year-old took to Twitter to pour cold water on the claims, branding it "fake news" and calling Rangers a "small club".

Cifuentes is an Ecuador international and moved to LAFC from Universidad Catolica in 2020.

Playing alongside the likes of Gareth Bale, Giorgio Chiellini and Carlos Vela, he helped the team win the MLS Cup on penalties in November after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Philadelphia Union.

It had been mentioned that Rangers would look to buy out the final six months of Cifuentes' contract with LAFC.

But the 24-year-old's comments would appear to indicate that he is not interested in the switch and it would look a little awkward if he did then join after the "small club".
