Mauricio Pochettino may have an edge over other candidates in regards to the England job after it emerged that John McDermott will lead the search for Gareth Southgate’s successor.

Southgate announced his decision to step down as England manager on Tuesday morning, less than 48 hours after the Three Lions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

In a statement announcing the news, he wrote: "As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

"But it's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager."

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott will now lead the process to appoint Southgate's replacement.

Bullingham confirmed the process for appointing Gareth’s successor is now under way. "We aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible," he said on Tuesday. "Our UEFA Nations League campaign starts in September, and we have an interim solution in place if it is needed."

A shortlist of potential candidates to succeed Gareth Southgate has emerged this week, with Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, and England under-21 manager Lee Carsley being mentioned.

Former Chelsea and Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is another name being linked – and the Argentine may have an advantage given his relationship with the FA's technical director John McDermott.

McDermott held the role of Head of Academy Coach and Player Development at Tottenham for 15 years and worked closely with Pochettino during his time in North London.

Back in May, the Telegraph reported that Pochettino would be a 'leading candidate' for the England job if the post became available after Euro 2024.

The 52-year-old left Chelsea by mutual consent in May and attracted the interest of numerous clubs, including Manchester United, who held discussions with the representatives of Pochettino.

A report from football.london suggests Pochettino would be keen on taking the England role.
