Ruben Dias' bizarre claim about the Champions League final defeat in 2021 has confused people online, including Manchester City fans.

The Blues resume their European venture against Bayern Munich as they look to win their first Champions League title.

The closest they have come to holding aloft the prestigious trophy was two seasons ago when they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the final.

Pep Guardiola's team succumbed to Thomas Tuchel's side as they go head-to-head on Tuesday, with the German boss replacing Julian Nagelsmann.

And ahead of the quarter-final first-leg tie at the Etihad, Dias and Guardiola fielded questions from the media.

Dias, who played in the final against Chelsea in the 2020/21 season, was asked about the crushing defeat and offered some words of wisdom.

On losing to Chelsea in the final, he said: "A very wise man once said to me, we didn’t lose the final, we got one step closer."

However, the Portuguese defender's comments sent social media into overdrive as fans tried to make sense of his claim.

One Twitter user wrote: "There's no step closer after a final buddy. That's the last hurdle."

A second tweeted: "Wise man ain't so wise then, you lost the final buddy."

A third added: "Ruben I love you man but you're gonna get cooked for this."

A fourth said: "Nah, you still lost."

Another commented: "Well the wise man lied because you did lose."

Dias could feature when Man City entertain Bayern, with the 25-year-old prepared for the visit of the defending German champions.

"It will be a balanced game between very two good teams," he said. "We know we are up against a different side and obviously the Premier League is different than Bundesliga. We know it will be a balanced game between us. We are very sharp and ready."

The game could also see Joao Cancelo play against his parent club, having moved to Bayern on loan during the January transfer window.

On potentially facing his fellow countryman, he added: "It will be strange. It will be good to play against him again, especially after our time here together. We have built a special relationship so we've been in contact, but when the game starts each will be on their own side."

Will Man City win the Champions League this season? Let us know what you think.
