Shirt number options for Cody Gakpo at Liverpool includes one worn by several club legends

The Dutch winger is set to complete a £37 million move to Liverpool from PSV this week.

As Cody Gakpo's transfer to Liverpool FC nears completion, thoughts are already turning to how he'll fit into manager Jurgen Klopp's plans.

One telltale sign as to how the German manager intends to use him could be the shirt number he is assigned after his assumed signing. Indeed, there are some sough-after jersey numbers up for grabs at the club, including one which was worn by the likes of Michael Owen, Phillippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane.

Gakpo, 23, is expected to complete his £37 million move from PSV to Liverpool imminently, becoming Liverpool's first - and maybe only - January arrival.

The arrival of the exciting winger will ease concerns over the left hand side, as both Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have been ruled out for an extended period of time. With this in mind, Gakpo is expected to come straight into a Liverpool team which faces a tough battle to claw its way back into the top four of the Premier League

It remains to be seen whether Gakpo will still be a key player when all Liverpool's forwards are fit and firing - including Roberto Firmino.

So, which number could the Dutchman inherit at the club, and what can that tell us about how Klopp and co rate him? Well, if he gets the heralded number 10, we might just have our answer. The jersey number has been worn by numerous legends through the decades.

Most recently it belonged to Mane, who wore it with distinction during a five-year stay at Anfield. With Gapko also being a highly-rated left-winger, one who can literally play the 'Number 10 role' as he did for the Netherlands at the World Cup, it would make a great deal of sense to give him the 10 jersey.

However, if Klopp and/or Gakpo agree that's not the right number for him, there are some other interesting options.

Given that his favoured number 11 (which is his current PSV number) is taken by Mohamed Salah, 12 could be an attractive option.

There is also 16, 20 and 18 - the latter of which most recently being worn by Takumi Minamino. While none of those have been worn by Gakpo previously, he could take inspiration from Trent Alexander-Arnold by making his original squad number iconic.

Gapko had the number 52 when he made his PSV debut, which currently belongs to a player who is yet to make his first team debut for the Reds - Isaac Mabaya.

Beyond those options, he could go for 24 or even 25, which rather curiously hasn't been worn since goalkeeper Pepe Reina was at the club.

Numbers 30 and 31 are also still there, the latter being Raheem Sterling's during his Liverpool days.
