Fans blast Gabby Agbonlahor for calling Mason Mount ‘an okay player’

Mason Mount was Chelsea’s Player of the Season last year

Gabby Agbonlahor has been slammed by fans after he called Chelsea star Mason Mount ‘an okay player’.

Mount first caught the eyes of Chelsea fans when he was playing under Frank Lampard whilst on loan at Championship side Derby County.

A year later, Mount found himself in the Chelsea first team after Lampard took over the reins at Stamford Bridge.

Since then he has gone on to make 195 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, scoring 33 goals.

However, former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor feels he’s nothing more than an okay player for the club.

He said on talkSPORT: “He’s scored 27 goals in 129 appearances, come on he’s not fantastic is he?

“Let’s be honest here, the stats show he’s an okay player. So you think 27 goals is enough for an England international, Odegaard has got 14 goals in one season.”

Fans were quick to react on social media as most people disagreed with Agbonlahor’s words.

One said: “Scoring goals is not the only thing Mount should be judged on. He's not a striker, unlike Agbonlahor who barely had a better goal per game ratio than Mount has.”

Another tweeted: “To be fair I think Mount's stats are decent for a midfielder.”

A third fan added: “Better than 86 in 406 isn’t it? Especially considering ones a midfielder and the other was a striker.”

Someone else wrote: “Mount’s goal scoring record as a midfield is better than Gabby’s as a striker.”

Whilst a fifth commented: “How can a man that scored 65 goals in 350 games AS A STRIKER say something like that?! It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

This season, Mount has struggled to nail down a regular spot in the Chelsea starting eleven, which has led to rumours that he may leave the club in the summer.

According to reports, Liverpool and Arsenal are keeping an eye on Mount’s situation, the 24-year-old’s contract with Chelsea is due to expire at the end of the 23/24 season.

To date, no agreement has been reached between the player and the club, which could tempt Chelsea into cashing in when the transfer window opens.
